The Estate
In the hills to the east of Montalcino rises the elegant 15th century building Palazzo Altesi, formerly owned by the Tricerchi family of Tuscany. Their ancient Coat of Arms, carved in white Carrara marble, is still visible above the antique oak door. In 2002, Altesino was purchased by Mrs. Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini, who relies on the collaboration of Pietro Rivella and Paolo Caciorgna for the oenological and technical aspects of winery management. Over the past 30 years, the estate has set trends in the production of Brunello di Montalcino, introducing many important innovations. In 1979, Altesino became the first winery in the area to make use of French Oak “barriques” or casks. Likewise, the concept of “Cru” was used for the first time to refer to the Montosoli vineyard on the property in 1975. In 1985, the first Futures (i.e. purchasing wine before its release) were printed and introduced on the market for 1985 Brunello and - last but not least - in 1977, the first Grappa di Fattoria was produced, thanks to a partnership with master distiller, Gioacchino Nannoni.
